What Are Exotic French Bulldogs?
Rare Colors, Genetics, and
What Makes Them Unique

When people talk about “exotic” French Bulldogs, they are referring to coat colors and patterns that fall outside the standard AKC breed colors, which are typically brindle, fawn, white, and cream.
These rare and highly sought-after colors are created through specific recessive genes and carefully planned breeding programs that focus on both appearance and health. Exotic French Bulldogs have become increasingly popular across the
United States due to their unique look, rarity, and standout visual appeal.
At Four Peaks French Bulldogs, we specialize in breeding exotic French Bulldog puppies such as New Shade Isabella, Lilac with Tan Points, and Merle.
What makes our French bulldogs exotic and unique is that all our puppies have hair that is fluffy or they have a recessive fluffy gene. Traditional French Bulldogs have short hair. Our French Bulldogs have either long hair or what is called Fluffy or they can produce fluffy puppies when bred to another fluffy French Bulldog.
A Fluffy French Bulldog is a rare and highly sought-after variety of the breed characterized by a long, soft coat rather than the standard short, smooth hair.
Their unique appearance and specialized genetics make them a standout choice
for enthusiasts looking for something beyond the traditional look.
What Makes Them Physically Unique?
Unlike the classic "wash-and-wear" coat of a standard Frenchie, Fluffies have noticeably longer fur, particularly around their ears, neck, and chest.
The Coat:
Their hair is wavy and soft to the touch, giving them a "teddy bear" appearance.
The Ears:
One of their most distinctive features is the long, wispy hair (often called "ear fringes") that accentuates their signature "bat ears."
The Science: The "Lh" Gene
The fluffy trait is entirely natural but rare because it is governed by a recessive gene known as the Fibroblast Growth Factor 5 (FGF5), or more simply, the Lh (Long Hair) gene.
Recessive Inheritance:
A puppy only becomes a "Visual Fluffy" if it inherits
two copies of this gene (one from each parent).
Carriers:
Many French Bulldogs carry a single copy of the gene without having long hair themselves. These "carriers" are essential in breeding programs to produce future generations of fluffy puppies.
Why They Are Special?
Exclusivity:
Because the gene is recessive, producing a Fluffy French Bulldog requires careful genetic testing and planning. This makes them much rarer than standard or even other "exotic" colors.
The Best of Both Worlds:
They maintain the beloved personality of the breed—affectionate, playful, and sturdy, but with a unique aesthetic that sets them apart in a crowd.
Luxury Status:
Due to their rarity and the complex genetics involved in breeding them healthily,
they are often considered the "top tier" of exotic French Bulldog varieties.

What exactly makes a color “exotic”? An exotic color is any hue that is not traditionally recognized in the standard show ring. These colors are often the result
of advanced genetic pairings and are prized for their uniqueness and beauty.
At Four Peaks French Bulldogs, we specialize in these rare visual traits and focus on producing high-quality exotic French Bulldog puppies with exceptional structure, temperament, and genetics, which include:
Lilac:
A beautiful grayish-purple tone created when a dog carries two copies of the blue gene and two copies of the chocolate gene or two copies of the blue gene and two copies of the cocoa gene. This color is known for its soft, elegant appearance and is highly desirable among French Bulldog enthusiasts due to its rarity and smooth, almost metallic finish.
Blue:
A dilute black that appears as a sleek, silvery-gray. Blue French Bulldogs have a clean and modern look that stands out, making them one of the most recognizable and popular exotic colors available today.
Isabella (New Shade):
A pale, champagne-like color that is one of the rarest and most sought-after dilutions. Isabella French Bulldogs are often considered a luxury color due to the complex genetics required to produce them, along with their soft, glowing coat.
Platinum:
A dog that appears almost white or cream but is genetically a dilute color
(like Lilac or Blue) hidden under a cream coat. Platinum French Bulldogs are especially eye-catching because of their bright, clean appearance paired
with hidden exotic genetics.
Due to the rarity of these exotic French Bulldog colors, availability may vary.

What are “Exotic Patterns”?
Beyond just the solid color, “exotic” also refers to how those colors are arranged across the dog’s coat. These patterns add another level of uniqueness and individuality to each puppy:
Merle: A stunning mottled pattern with patches of different colors. Each merle French Bulldog has a completely unique coat pattern, making no two dogs exactly alike.
Tan Points: “Eyebrow” markings and leg spots similar to a Rottweiler or Doberman. These markings create a bold, defined look that enhances facial expression and overall appearance.
Harlequin: A specific type of merle with large, distinct torn-edge patches on a white background. This pattern is rare and highly prized for its dramatic contrast and visual impact.
Does an exotic color affect the dog’s personality? Not at all. Whether it is a Lilac Platinum like Bisbee or a standard brindle, a French Bulldog’s temperament is shaped by its breeding, care, and environment, not its color.
At Four Peaks French Bulldogs, our exotic puppies are raised in a loving family setting in Scottsdale to ensure they are well-socialized, affectionate, and ready to become part of your family.
Understanding the Rare “Rojo” and “Pink” Genes
At Four Peaks French Bulldogs, we are at the forefront of Frenchie genetics and focus on producing truly unique and rare puppies. If you are looking for a French Bulldog that stands out from the rest, these advanced genetic traits are what set our litters apart:
The “Rojo” (Testable Chocolate) Gene
What it is: Unlike non-testable chocolate, Rojo is a specific and rare mutation of the B-Locus that can be genetically identified, making it highly valuable for breeding programs.
The Look: It produces a rich, warm, reddish-brown coat along with striking light-colored eyes, often amber or green, that remain vibrant into adulthood.
Why it is Special: Rojo is a key component in producing “New Shade” Isabella French Bulldogs. Owning a Rojo carrier or visual Rojo places you in an elite category of French Bulldog owners and breeders.
The “Pink” (Hidden) Trait
What it is: One of the newest and most exciting developments in exotic French Bulldog breeding. The “Pink” gene, often associated with specialized genetic markers, modifies the coat in a unique and subtle way.
The Look: It creates a soft “peaches and cream” appearance, with a gentle glow that can show a slight pinkish hue under certain lighting conditions.
The Value: Because this gene is recessive and still relatively new, puppies carrying the Pink trait are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors and experienced breeders.
“Lilac Platinum” (The Bisbee Standard)
What it is: Often referred to as the “triple crown” of exotic colors, a Lilac Platinum dog is genetically a Lilac (double blue and double chocolate or double blue and double cocoa) while also carrying the cream gene.
The Look: These dogs appear as a stunning cream or white, with subtle
lilac pigmentation visible on the nose, lips, and eyeliner, giving them a soft and
refined appearance.
The Quality: Our Lilac Platinum French Bulldogs, like Bisbee, represent the highest level of breeding clean structure, excellent health, and premium genetics that reflect the quality and care behind every puppy we produce.
